Abstract
1351013 Forging; extruding BOLT ASSOCIATES Inc 19 April 1971 [24 Feb 1970] 22476/71 Headings B3H and B3P [Also in Division B5] A high energy impulse forming apparatus comprises a pair of dies 14, 19, Fig. 3, to compact a powder 22 or forge a metal billet and a dual-piston hammer 26, 30 arranged to be impacted by a piston 54, Fig. 1, accelerated along a cylinder 52. The pistons 26, 30 are initially separated by pressurized fluid 28 which serves to move the pistons apart and pre-pressurize the powder or billet. The top of the upper piston 26 has an oil cushion 55 for the accelerated piston 54, the piston 54 is held retracted by hydraulically operated retainers 72. The chamber 64 behind the piston 54 is pressurized by high pressure gas released from an apparatus 60 supplied from a compressor. The lower platen 11 is lowered so that the die cavity can be filled and after closure of the dies the chamber 36 and the die cavity are evacuated. The powder is chemically cleaned and kept in a vacuum or an inert atmosphere of helium or nitrogen during loading. The formed product is ejected by a push-rod 97 after the lower platen 11 has been lowered. The piston 54 is raised by air from a duct 92 after the pressure between the pistons 26, 30 has been lowered to uncover the duct outlet. The apparatus 60, the retainers 72 and the gas and liquid valves of the apparatus are operated in a timed sequence by an electric controller 68. (For Figures see next page.)
