Abstract
900,741. Drawing. ANACONDA AMERICAN BRASS CO. Feb. 20, 1961 [April 22, 1960], No. 6142/61. Class 83 (4). A tube pointing apparatus comprises a frame, a stationary die fixed to the frame, and first and second movable dies displaceable relative to the stationary die, said dies when in the open position together defining an opening sufficiently large to receive the tube, and when closed defining a cavity of polygonal cross-section of less width than the maximum width of the tube, said stationary die defining at least two adjacent sides of said cavity and said first and second movable dies defining the remaining sides of said cavity. The frame 10 has a vertical surface 11 and a horizontal surface 12 which between them support the two sections 16 and 17 of the stationary die. The part 16 has a V-shaped groove 19 therein which forms two sides of an hexagonal cavity, and the flat upper surface of the block 17 forms a third side of the cavity. A plunger 13 operated by an hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder carries a first movable die 23 which slides against the surface 20 of the block 16 and has a flat working surface 25 which forms one side of the cavity. Mounted on a power-operated plunger 14 is a second movable die 27 which has a base portion 28 and a projecting portion 29 which slides between the block 17 and the die face 25 when the first die is closed. The end of the portion 29 has a V-groove which forms the two remaining sides of the hexagonal cavity which exists when the dies are in the closed position. In operation, a tube is placed between the open dies as in Fig. 1, the first die 23 is brought down until the surface 25 is level with the top edge of the groove 19, thus forming the tube to an oblong cross-section with rounded ends and then the second die 29 is moved in until the tube is compacted as in Fig. 3. In a modification, the cavity is octagonal, Fig. 5 (not shown), and two sides of the cavity are formed in each of the stationary die parts and in each of the moving dies.
