Abstract

575,921. Drawing profiled tubes. DEWEY, C. L. Aug. 28, 1944, No. 16309. [Classes 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] A tube for use in making furniture, lamp standards or fixtures, bicycle or airplane frames, &c., is shaped by moving it relatively through a die opening formed by dies adjustable radially to the tube to apply pressure in closely-spaced lines transverse to the axis of the tube. A carriage 50, Fig. 1, is mounted on ways 48, 49 and has four radially-movable slides 71, each pressed towards a fixed templet 28, 33, 40 or 45 by springs 74 and carrying a die 78, Fig. 2, with its face grooved to form blades 80 which are transverse to the tube and arranged to pass between the blades of the two adjacent dies. With the carriage 50 in position A, Fig. 4, and the dies 78 fully withdrawn, a tube T, preferably tapered or shaped as described in Specification 519,500, is fixed between a spring-pressed centre pin 89 and chuck jaws 81 operated by a hydraulic piston 85. The carriage 50 is then moved to the right by a screw 64, gearing 93 and motor 94, the dies being moved by the templets 28 to produce a square section from 6 to 7, a flat rectangular section from 8 to 10, and a square section from 10 to 11. When the carriage 50 reaches the position B, the tube can be withdrawn and bent as required. By using four dies with their acting faces shaped cross-sections such as shown in Figs. 17 or 18 can be produced or with six dies sections such as in Figs. 13 to 16. In a modification, the part,50 is fixed and the tube and templets move longitudinally.
