A door closer of the kind comprising a housing 10 adapted to be mounted within a recess above or below the door, a member 13 mounted for angular movement' in the housing, said member having a spigot or socket for engaging with a complementary part on the door, a biasing means in the housing, and a dashpot device 23 within the housing, the member carrying means whereby the angular movement of said member on opening the door results in compression of the biasing means, and said member also carrying means whereby closing of the door under the action of the biasing means is controlled by the dashpot device, is characterized in that the biasing means comprises stacks of Belleville washers 21 in end-to-end relation, the rating of the sets differing so that the rating of the biasing means varies with the degree of compression. As illustrated in Fig. 2, the Belleville washers between abutments 22 and 20 operate on the spindle 13 via rods 19, carriage 17 and cam 15. The dashpot device operates via cam 16.
