Abstract
1,110,888. Vacuum switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 31 March, 1967 [23 May, 1966], No. 14725/67. Heading H1N. The thin walled tubular shields 30, 34, 35 within the envelope of a vacuum switch are provided with smooth rounded beads of arc melted metal at their ends 40, 41, 43 to improve the dielectric strength of the switch. The shields are made of nickel 0À05 inches thick. Before assembly of the switch an arc is struck between the shield and an electrode (50), (Fig. 2, not shown), which is then moved rapidly around the edge of the shield so as to melt, without burning, the edge; an atmosphere of argon is maintained during this process. The arc melted region is stated to have much greater grain size than the rest of the shield.
