Abstract

941,730. Discharge lamps. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 3, 1962 [Jan. 6, 1961], No. 680/61. Heading H1D. In an electric discharge tube an initiating arc is formed between an auxiliary electrode 12 and a main electrode with which it is initially in contact, and then transferred utilizing the magnetic loop effect to the main arc path 6, 7, the auxiliary electrode being mounted upon a bimetallic member 13 which carries the current of the initiating arc and which on heating separates the main and auxiliary electrodes. The Provisional Specification describes also a modification of Fig. 1 in which an elongated auxiliary electrode moves between the supports for the main electrodes. An are runner 14, Fig. 2, may be provided, and the tube may contain a glass or metal reflector.
