960,632. Ion sources. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 30, 1962 [Dec. 7, 1961], No. 43861/61. Heading H1D. A mass spectrometer ion source comprising two relatively movable arc electrodes 9, 11 at least one of which is composed of the material to be analysed has a flexible heat conductor 26 between the electrode support clamp 7 and a heat absorber, as shown a flask 21 containing liquid air, nitrogen or helium or, alternatively, a thermoelectric cooling device 6 within the flask 21 or encapsulated and inserted within the ion source chamber. The other electrode 11 may be similarly connected to the flask 21 in which case the metal portion 23 of the flask may be in two parts separated by a glass ring or the metal portion 23 may be replaced by a glass body encircled by two metal bands. Alternatively the electrode 11 may be connected to a second flask similar to flask 21. A shield may be placed round the flask 21. A shield 16 covers the ends of the electrodes 9, 11 and is mounted on the clamp 7.
