Abstract

1,106,822. Hard anodizing aluminium. REYNOLDS METALS CO. May 21, 1965 [June 30, 1964], No.21683/65. Heading C7B. Light gauge sheet aluminium is hard anodized on at least one surface to produce a hard oxide coating constituting 10 to 40% of the original thickness of the sheet to improve its rigidity and compressive strength. The aluminium sheet may be in the form of a food or beverage can or an aluminium foil honeycomb core and may be treated by the process of Specification 1, 022, 423 at 50 to 80‹F. or by the well-known low temperature (0 to 32‹F. ) process using mineral or organic acids. For this purpose the article to be treated are disposed between a pair of spaced apertured plates connected as cathode and the bath circulated through the electrodes while being agitated with air. As described articles treated are of aluminium (99À7%) and aluminium base alloy containing on a percentage basis Si 0À30 max., Fe 0À40 max., Cu 0À10 max., Zn 0À10 max., Mn 0À05 to 0À20, Mg 4À5 to 5À6, Cr 0À05 to 0À20.
