In an hydraulic extrusion press having a billet piercing mandrel 7 actuated by a carriage 15 disposed within the structure 1 carrying the extrusion ram 2, the carriage 15 is slidable along the press bed 3 and is attached to the mandrel actuating piston 17 by a connection providing radial clearance 20, 21. Mandrel actuating piston 17 is disposed within the main piston 5 actuating the ram structure 1 which also slides along the bed 3.
