In a tubulous boiler having a membrane tube wall with horizontal tube lengths extending in groups from a compartment formed in a support for the tube so that the tubes of a group form parallel flow paths through the compartment to tubes of a group at a different level, two tube groups extend in opposed directions for outflow from the compartment to two other compartments, and two other tube groups extend from opposed directions for inflow to the compartment from two further compartments. In a boiler furnace with walls of horizontal tubes arranged in groups carried by supports 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 spaced round the walls, Fig. 1, the water flows through groups 8, 9 to a compartment of the support 4 from compartments in adjacent supports 3, 5, and from the compartment in the support 4 through tube groups 10, 11 to superjacent compartments in the supports 3, 5. In a modification, Fig. 4, water flows to a compartment of support 35 from compartments of supports 34, 36, alternate supports 30, 31, 32 being connected in a second flow path by tube groups 39 by-passing the compartments of supports 34, 35.
