Abstract
A gill drafting machine comprises a first drafting station in which the gill bars are driven by a screw threaded spindle, followed by a second drafting station in which the gill bars are driven by a chain wheel, and means which monitor the sliver thickness and control the speed of at least one pair of drafting rollers. As described 36 bast fibre slivers are fed from sliver cans via a guide wheel to the first drafting station in which the top front drafting roller is adjustably weighted, and then to a doubling table having sliver guiding elements - for example slots or bars which may be oblique,-to produce 6 doubled slivers. The doubled slivers are compressed by rollers, partially converged by oblique bars, passed through the second drafting station and then, doubled to produce one sliver which is compressed and coiled in a can. The sliver thickness may be optically or electrically monitored and the speed of the drafting rollers of the second, or both drafting stations is thereby controlled. Alternatively each station may have its own monitoring device. Each sliver may be monitored and the average value fed to an electric motor driving the rollers.
