Abstract

A metal surface is cleaned with an aqueous solution containing citric acid, an alkali metal tartrate and a fluoride. Machined surfaces of Fe, Ni, Co and their alloys are treated, the fluoride acting as a complexing agent. The cleaned surface may be metal coated by electro-deposition or by catalytic reduction. If the surface is heavily oxidized or glass coated it may be first immersed in HF and H2O2.
