Abstract

1387333 Blackening titanium surfaces IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) LTD 5 Oct 1973 [17 July 1972] 33345/72 Heading C7U A Ti surface is blackened by contacting it with an aqueous solution of H 2 SO 4 and CrO 3 . The H 2 SO 4 concentration is greater than 30% by vol, preferably 50-70%, the CrO 3 concentration is in the range 35-12D g/l, and the temperature is greater than 100‹C, preferably 120-160‹C. The blackened surface may be subsequently electroplated with Au, Ag, Cu, Ni or Pt group metals, e.g. Pt-Ir alloy. Prior to electroplating, a paint containing a precious metal compound may be applied to the blackened surface which on heating decomposes to form the precious metal, or oxide of the precious metal. The surface may be selectively blackened by using a photo-resist.
