Abstract

Zinc, iron, steels, nickel and cobalt are polished in an aqueous solution comprising 48 to 50% by weight hydrofluoric acid, and 30% by weight hydrogen peroxide, in a molar ratio of H2O2 to HF between 3 and 7. The solution may be at room temperature 70 or 80 DEG C. and the time of immersion may be 1 minute. The metal may be pretreated by immersing for 6 to 8 minutes in a solution comprising 300 gms. 1l of tartaric acid and 6 mols. 1l of hydrochloric acid at 60 DEG C.
