Abstract
1,081,221. Paddle wheel propellers. J. M. VOITH G.m.b.H. July 12, 1964 [July 12, 1963], No. 25038/64. Heading B7G. A paddle wheel propeller comprises blades 5 each mounted on a pivot 4 and connected to a lever 6 through an overload release device comprising a spring-loaded radiallyslidable peg 20 or axially-slidable bush (27) (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) mounted on the blade 5 and engaging by a chamfered head 21 (or 31) a recess in a cammed surface of a yoke 24 or cover (30) fixed to the lever 6. The blades are oscillated about the pivots 4 as they rotate about a propeller axis parallel to the pivot axis by linkages which each comprise a rod (7) articulated in one embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown) to one end of a bell-crank, the other end of which is slidably mounted in a guide on movable control member, and in another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) to one end of a lever, the other end of which is pivotally mounted on a movable control member, and which has a link connecting a point intermediate its ends to a pivot on the propeller body. The pivot axis of each blade is sufficiently far forward for the blade to tend to take up a position tangential to the blade circle when the overload ceases.
