Abstract

880,590. Screw propellers. GRUT, H. T. Feb. 15, 1960 [Nov. 6, 1959]; No. 5234/60. Class 114. The blades of a screw propeller comprise a rod 2 attached to the hub 1 at 7, a port 4 movable along but not around the rod and having secured thereto a shell 3 formed as an aerofoil with an end piece 6 rotationally mounted on the rod 2, and means 8, 9, 10 for rotating the end piece 6 to adjust the angle of trust of the blade. Due to the torsional force applied by the adjusting means 8, 9, 10 the shell 3 and rod 2 will be elastically deformed and since the rod has greater rigidity than the shell, the angular displacement is distributed along the blade partly as a continuous twist of the shell and partly as a small angular displacement at the tip of the blade due to the twist of the rod 2. The adjusting means 8, 9, 10 may be manually or power operated (power operation being preferably connected to the speedometer of the vehicle), and is fixable in different positions by a locking device 11, 12, 13. The adjusting means may be disconnected and the rod 2 rotated about its axis 7 by means not shown, to turn the entire blade around its longitudinal axis e.g. when reversing or feathering the propeller. The shell may be provided with elastic supports, e.g. lengths of elastic material 14l, 14t along the leading and trailing edges.
