Abstract

653,024. Propelling aircraft. ROBERT, R. A. May 27, 1948, No. 14356. Convention date, May 27, 1947. [Class 4] [Also in Group XXI] Auxiliary rockets are releasably attached to an aircraft or guided missile by a device which allows the rockets to be released only when the propulsive action of every one has ceased. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, four auxiliary rockets 14 are symmetrically disposed around a guided missile 10. The forward end of each rocket 14 is surrounded by bands 17, 18 joined by a member 19 having slots 22 engaging a pin 26 carried by a bar 25 as shown in Fig. 2. The rear end of the bar 25 is formed with an openended slot 42 engaging a pin 44 projecting from the missile 10 whilst a shoulder 27 at the forward end is forced by a resilient block 39 against an abutment 28 on a spring-loaded latch 30. At the tail of the missile 10 is mounted a flange 66, Fig. 5, engaged by a flange 61 and a rectangular block 71 on an arm 59 pivoted at 60 to the flange 61. The arms 59 each carry a sleeve 57 surrounding the rear of an auxiliary rocket and connected thereto by a spring 56 abutting collars 55, 58 on the rocket 14 and sleeve 57 respectively. Electrical contacts 73, 74 mounted respectively on the rocket 14 and sleeve 57 are held apart by a shear pin 76 passing through contact 73 and fingers 75 projecting on either side of the contact 73 from the sleeve 57. During take-off the auxiliary rocket thrust shears the pin 76 and compresses the spring 56. Cessation of propulsive action allows this spring to move the rocket rearwardly relative to the missile 10 and close the contacts 73, 74. When all the rockets are expended, their individual contacts are all closed, completing an electrical circuit and energizing a jack 83, Fig. 1, which by extending a member 84 actuates, by means of a lever 89 and a link 92, a lever 93 to release the latch 30. Each rocket then pivots on an arm 59 about the hinge 60 under aerodynamic forces until at a predetermined angle the blocks 71 clear the flange 72 and the auxiliary rockets and their attachments are jettisoned.
