Abstract

627,835. Projectiles. INTERTYPE, Ltd. Jan. 4, 1946, No. 377. Convention date, May 8, 1945. [Classes 9 (i) and 77] A cable-carrying projectile intended to penetrate the ground to anchor the cable is provided with a nose-portion 1 designed to give maximum anchorage, a body-portion 2 to which the cable 10 is attached and a tail-portion 3 comprising a rocket motor, the point of attachment of the cable being near the centre of balance of the projectile. The nose-portion 1 is a solid cold-rolled cylindrical steel rod of length 30-42 inches and diameter 1¢ inches. The forward end 5 of this portion 1 is a flat surface perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the projectile. The body portion 2 is a solid rod of hard steel of reduced diameter (1 inch mentioned) having a threaded end 7 received in a tapped recess 6 in the nose-portion 1. Alternatively the nose-portion 1 and bodyportion 2 may be portions of a single rod. A sleeve or collar 2a, shrunk or welded on to the portion 2, has a boss 16 for the attachment of the forward end of a wire cable 10. The attachment may be by a swivel connection as shown in Specification 627,834, [Group XXV]. The third portion 3 of the projectile comprises a rocket motor, the forward end of which engages in an adaptor 20 fitted on to the rear end of portion 2. A pin 25 passing through diametrically-arranged holes in members 20 and 2, locks them together. Mounted on the adaptor and rocket motor are two sets of spaced fins 30 and 35 which stabilize the projectile in flight and help to position it in the launching device. Instead of a rocket motor a Stokes mortar type shell may be used. A modified form of nose is described, having backwardly projecting flukes for engagement with wire, trees, &c. Specifications 582,733 and 609,733 also are referred to.
