Abstract

776,249. Anchor bolts. BAYLISS, JONES & BAYLISS, Ltd. Feb. 11, 1954 [Feb. 11, 1953; Feb. 29, 1953], Nos. 3785/53 and 26665/53. Class-89 (1). A tie bolt assembly includes a sleeve like anchor member 10 comprising end portions 12, 13 integrally united by an intermediate portion 14 provided with longitudinal slots or slits 15 and adapted to bow outwardly in response to longitudinal compression, and a tie-rod 11 having a head 19 not substantially exceeding the initial outer crosssectional dimensions of the anchor member 10 and non-threadably engaged with an axially directed abutment face on the end portion 13. The member 10 is preferably formed of hot drawn seamless steel tube of a ductile quality and annealed, the carbon content being, for example, between 0.1 and 0.2 per cent. The tie-rod 11 is also preferably formed of mild steel although both the anchor member and the tie-rod could be formed of alloys. Four slots 15 are preferably formed in the anchor member 10 and the limb 16 between them are pre-bowed so that the apex 17 is offset from the centre of the limbs towards the end portion 13. When the assembly is inserted into a bore-hole a tubular tool provided at its outer end with a pressureplate is passed over the shank 11 until it engages the end portion 12 and the tie-rod protrudes through an aperture in the pressureplate. Expansion of the anchor member is now effected by screwing a nut on to the protruding end of the tie-rod until an enlargement 23 is produced in the bore-hole. In relatively hard strata the limbs 16 fold back over the end portion 13 as shown in Fig. 3 and thus strengthen this against outward expansion to prevent the tie-rod from pulling through. To hold the anchor member in place on the tie-rod during insertion into a bore-hole a fillet weld 21 may be made or, alternatively, a frictional fit may be relied on. Dimensions for the anchor member and tie-rod are specified. Specification 776,251 is referred to.
