fiAMMER Filed March 10, 1945 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Feb. 20, 1945 UNITED 'STATE s PATENT OFFICE HAMMER George W; Maxey, Cleveland, Ohio Application Ma a 10, 1943, Serial No. 478,709
1 Claim.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a hammer head fastening means which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong,
durable, compact, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
' Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a hammer embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is a view principally invertical longitudinal section.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the tool.
- Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in end elevation of the tool before the cap plate is applied.
Figure 5 is a detail view in perspective of the plate. v
Figure 6 is a view in side elevation of an end portion of the handle with the head-retaining bars thereon, showing said bars before the outer end portions thereof are bent outwardly.
sliding on the bars 4 and abutting the outturned inner end portions lthereof. The outer end portions of the bars 4, which project beyond the handle I, are then bent outwardly in amanner to provide anchoring flanges 10 which are engaged with the head 8.
A wedge II is driven into the outer end portion 2 of the handle I in the usual manner for Figure 7 is a detail view in perspective of one a of the head-retaining bars.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a handle I.
I The handle I includes a forward end portion 2 of substantially rectangular cross section. .The handle I further includes shoulders 3 at the inner end of the portion 2 which project upwardly 4 are secured longitudinally on spreading or expanding said handle in the eye 9. Then, a metallic plate I2 is secured by screws l3 onthe forward end of thehandle I over the wedge II and between the outer end portions of the bars 4.
It will thus be seen that a construction and arrangement has been provided whereby the head 8 of the tool is positively anchored on the handle .l'. The plate l2, in addition to retaining the wedge ll positively spaces the outer end portions of the bars 4 and protects this end of the handle;
The outturned end portions 1 and ID of the metallic bars 4 prevent longitudinal movement of the head 8 in either direction.
It is believed that the many advantages of a hammer constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodimentof the tool is as illustrated and described, it isto be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is .A tool of the character described comprising a handle including an end portion of substantially rectangular cross section, shoulders on the handle at the inner end of said substantially rectangular end portion, metallic bars mounted longitudinally on said end portion of the handle and including outturned inner end portions abutting the shoulders, a head mounted on said end portion of the handle and including an ey abutting said outturned inner end portions of the bars,
' said bars having outer end portions projecting beyond the head and adapted to be bent angularly against the head, a wedge engaged in the handle for expanding same in the eye, and a metallic plate secured on the handle over the wedge and engaged between the outer end portions of the bars to reinforce the outer ends thereof while the latter are being bent.
