663,755. Rod and tube couplings. PORTER, A. T., and ROBERTS, G. M. June 20, 1949 [June 19, 1948], No. 16558/48. Class 99 (i) An expanding plug, for connecting two tubes either in alignment or at an angle or for connecting a tube to a plane surface, comprises a bolt with a conical head 1, Fig. 11, and a hexagonal &c. shank 2, a split conical sleeve 4 and a collar or distance piece 9 holed to fit the shank 2. The collar and shank may be splined or otherwise formed to rotate together by a tommy bar applied at 11 to screw up the bolt in an anchorage 16 welded or otherwise fixed in the tube 15. The tubes 14, 15 to be connected engage reduced ends on the collar, which may have spanner flats. In a modification where the bolt is formed from hexagonal stock of the size of the shank the sleeve 4 is in two or more pieces to permit application to the head and the pieces are grooved externally for a retaining ring. The bolt may screw into a hole tapped into a plane surface the abutting ends of the collar being left unreduced. In place of the fixed anchorage 16 a second split sleeve may be employed, expanded by a conical nut. There may be clearance between the collar and shank the latter then having a tommy slot reached through a hole or holes in the collar. When tubes are to be connected at an angle the end of the collar 9, Fig. 13, may be shaped to fit the transverse hole or as shown a distance piece 24 may be interposed. The nut 3 is either anchored in the tube or the tube may be reinforced and the nut applied externally.
