Abstract

1,002,869. Armour piercing projectiles. P. R. G. GRENANDER, and S. E. PHILIP. Nov. 19, 1963 [Nov. 20, 1962], No. 45689/63. Heading F3A. An armour-piercing projectile comprises a case enclosing a core having a hemispherical forward end which is articulated to a conical cavity in a core-supporting member. A prestressed outer case 1 with a bottom member 2 encloses a core 3, the front end of which is in the form of a hemisphere. In front of the core 3 is a heavy metal core-supporting member 5 having at its rear end a conical cavity into which the hemispherical end of the core 3 fits freely. On oblique impact the front part of the core-supporting member 5 is deflected about its centre of gravity away from the target so that the rear part with the conical cavity is directed towards the target taking with it the forward end of the core 3. The vertical angle of the projectile nose is less than 35 degrees while the case 3 may be divided transversely into more than one part by a dividing line 7 which checks cracks and allows the separate parts to be made of different materials. A notch 8 impedes cracks spreading to the rear of the outer case 1. Specification 752,448 is referred to.
