Abstract
855,592. Self-propelled missiles. BOLKOW, L. April 4, 1957 [April 5, 1956], No. 11080/57. Class 9(2). A self-propelled missile 1 having a main propellant charge 8 and a launching charge 10 attached to the body 1 is provided with a discharge nozzle 9 for the gases from charge 10, which is arranged to give, when the missile is orientated with the nozzle 9 facing downwards, both an upward lift and a forward thrust, so that the missile may be launched directly from the ground. The missile, which contains a hollow charge, has a conically tapered nose and is provided with four mutually perpendicular fins 3 - 6, attached to the body 1 by means of feet 7. The nozzle 9 is inclined atan angle α > 15 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the projectile, so that the axis of the nozzle passes through the centre of gravity S which lies within the zone of the fins. Each fin may house steering devices 11, e.g. magnetic drives acting on adjustable control surfaces. The casing of charge 10 is attached at the forward end to the body 1 by a pin 15 engaged in bracket 13 and at the rear by solder 16, which is melted by the burning of charge 10. When charge 10 is burnt out, the casing falls away from the missile. To launch the missile, it is placed on the ground supported by two fins between which nozzle 9 is directed downwardly. To give additional support the forward end of the rocket may rest on a bracket, which is retracted by a spring when the missile leaves the ground.
