Abstract

823,526. Variable pitch propellers for ships. SLACK & PARR (MARINE) Ltd. Dec. 2, 1955 [Dec. 2, 1954], No. 34904/54. Class 114. In a variable pitch marine propeller the control rod 24 extending from the hollow propeller shaft 28 carries at its end a crosshead 22 substantially rectangular in both plan and elevation. The sides of the crosshead are slotted at 29 the bottoms of the slots deepening forwardly to form a tapered centre piece 30 which is bolted to the control rod 24. Each slot is traversed by a pivot pin 32 carrying a link 34 of which the other end is pivoted on a crankpin 33 integral with a disc 17 bolted at 16 to the blade root 14 and serving to secure the blade to the hub 10. The links 34 lie wholly within the vertical height of the crosshead the forward part of which is grooved to accommodate the heads 19 of the bolts 16. In assembling the device, after the crank discs 17 have been bolted to the blade roots the cross head is inserted from the rear and secured to the control shaft 24 by a bolt 26, the rear being then closed by a cap 37. In operation, the sides of the ends of the links 34 about the crank pins 33 engage the control rod 24 to limit the blade movement. The invention may be applied to three- or four-bladed propellers in which case the crosshead is arranged behind the crank discs 17 and slides on guide rods which also prevent it from rotating.
