501,467. Paddle-wheels. VOITH, W., VOITH, H., and VOITH, H., (trading as VOITH, J. M., [Firm of]). Dec. 9, 1937, Nos. 34174 and 34175. Convention dates, Dec. 9, 1936 and March 12, 1937. [Class 4] In a paddle-wheel in which the blades feather during rotation about axes substantially parallel to the wheel axis, and in which the planes containing the leading edges and the axes of the blades at either end of the diameter DD are normal to the direction of propulsion, the normals to the blades traversing the quadrant - EF intersect the diameter DD at points nearer the centre O than the normals on the same side of that diameter that are traversing the other quadrants, in particular the quadrants HE and FG. In one form, each blade pivot 1 carries a lever 3 connected by a link 4 to a bellcrank lever 5, 7 pivoted to the wheel at 6. The arms 7 engage slides 8 mounted on a rotatable ring 9 which may be eccentered relatively to the paddle-wheel. The lengths of the arms 3, 5 and the rod 4 are selected so that the arms 3, 5 converge towards the pivots 1, 6. The intersections more remote from the centre 0 may lie outside the periphery of the wheel. The angular deviation from the tangential position of a blade traversing the forward part of the rotor may be less by an amount than the corresponding deviation of a blade moving in the rearward part of the rotor, # being expressed in circular measure from the following, viz.: 0À01 #1+C8 < # < 0À06 #1+C8 where Cs = S / F. gamma /2g .Ve<2>, s being the thrust produced, F the blade-wheel diameter multiplied by the length of a blade, y the specific gravity of the fluid and Ve the admission velocity of fluid into the wheel.
