Abstract
189,751. Kirsten, K. F. J. Dec. 1, 1921, [Convention date]. Paddle-wheels.-A paddle-wheel either acting as a receiver or transmitter of power from or to a fluid is formed with a relatively large number of curved vanes or blades, the ratio of the width of the blades to wheel diameter, being such that the angle of incidence is always positive along the whole side of each blade and of practically constant value, and is wholly on one side of the blade throughout its revolution. Mechanism for varying the phase or resultant direction of thrust is provided. The gathering gear ratios are such that the chords of the aerofoils when produced pass through a common point on the wheel periphery. For use as a propeller for aircraft the aerofoils 21, Figs 1 and 2 have their axes mounted in side plates 17, 18 on the shaft 19, a gear wheel 23 on each axis gearing with a common spur wheel 22. The plates 17, If carry stream line casings 36 one of which encloses a bevel gearing 28, 29 which through four rods 27 and gearing 26, 25 en four aerofoil axes is used for " phase " control. In place of the gearing, chain drive and control may be used. The width of the blades may vary from 5 to 20 per cent of the wheel diameter, and the number of blades multiplied by their width is not less than 70 per cent of, and approximates to the length of the periphery of the wheel. The radius of curvature of a blade section increases from the inner to the outer edge.
