Abstract

A propeller driven by an auxiliary engine of a sailing boat has its blades (4) mounted on spindles (16) so that when the engine is not running, they can turn to offer a minimum resistance to the flow of water. These blades are slightly curved to cause a minimum of turbulence. The two spindles carry bevil pinions (17) which mesh with a common pinion (12) mounted on the end of the drive shaft (2). This shaft carries a block along one end, parallel to its axis of rotation which can make half a turn inside a space (20) between its periphery and the hollow interior of the casing (14) on which the blades are supported. Thus, when the engine is started up, a relative rotation of half a turn takes place between the drive shaft (2) and the whole propeller blade casing, to allow the bevel drive (12, 17) to rotate and twist the blades the required amount.
