Abstract

438,317. Paddle-wheels. VOITH, W., VOITH, H., and VOITH, H., (trading as VOITH, J. M. [Firm of]), Heidenheim-on- Brenz, Wurtemberg, Germany. March 14, 1935, No. 7966. Convention date, March 26, 1934. [Class 4] Means for feathering the blades of a blade wheel in which the blade axes are parallel or approximately parallel to the wheel axis, comprise an eccentrically movable member C, Fig. 1, which is centrally located when the pitch of the blades is zero and which revolves with the blade wheel, and rods G pivotally connected thereto at F and adapted to slide longitudinally through oscillatable guides H the pivotal points of which are fixedly located upon wheel A and from which the angular movement of blades B is obtained. The control member C is rotatably mounted on a ball pivot D, Fig. 2, supported in a stationary bearing E and movable by hand or by external control means to impart any desired degree of eccentricity to member C. Member C is driven with wheel A by means of a coupling lever K formed at its outer end with a guide slot k<1>. In a modified form, one slide rod G<2> is rigidly, instead of pivotally, connected to member C, thus by virtue of the fixed location of its associated guide block H serving to rotate the control member. In order to compensate for the difference in the angular velocity of control member C and of wheel A the lengths of rods J connecting slide rods G with blade levers b<2> are made slightly different one from the other and slide blocks H are not located upon a circle about the axis of the wheel body. Fig. 4 shows diagrammatically the relationship between the angular positions of the rod G and of the blade arm b<2>. It will be seen that owing to the periodic variation in the free length l of rod G, the velocity of joint g<1> is particularly high during the period in which the blade pitch changes from a positive maximum to a negative minimum value. The optimum result is stated to be obtained when the gear is so arranged that with the control member central the guide member intersects rod G at a point between one-half and one-third of its length from the inner end. The blade wheel may be employed for propelling ships or aircraft or as a rotor in hydraulic or wind power machinery.
