Abstract

15,940. Greenhall, Sir G., Rathmill, J., and Thorley, F. July 8. Propelling.-In a rotary propeller of the kind in which the blades in feathering turn about axes parallel to the propeller shaft, clutches and gearing are provided by which each blade moves parallel to itself during the operative first half of each revolution, and remains stationary on its axis during the inoperative second half of the revolution. The propeller shaft c carries a plate g with spindles h for two toothed wheels i, which are rotated in opposite directions to the shaft c t h r o u g h idle wheels f and a stationary wheel e concentric with the shaft c. The blades a are pivoted on the ends of arms b carried by the shaft c, and are turned or held stationary on their pivots by cranks and connecting-rods from shafts p, according as these shafts are connected with the spindles h by clutches k or are disconnected therefrom. The clutches k are automatically moved into or out of connexion with the spindles h at each halfrevolution of the propeller by a beam n, which is pivoted on the shaft c and is oscillated through links o', o<2> and a bellcrank o from a crank m on the shaft of a toothed wheel gearing with one of the wheels i. The direction of thrust of the propeller may be adjusted by turning the wheel e. The blades a comprise end pieces q connected by adjustable rods or wires r and carrying flexible material s adapted to curve to a radius struck from the propeller axis.
