Abstract
785,865. Windscreen cleaners. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 6, 1956 [March 23, 1955], No. 7017/56. Class 138(1). A windscreen wiper assembly 10, Fig. 2, particularly for use with " wrap-around " windscreens, has a primary yoke 12 adapted to be attached (by a socket 14) to a wiper arm (not shown), one end 16 of the yoke 12 being pivotally connected at 18 intermediate the ends 38, 40 of a secondary yoke 20, which ends 38, 40 are connected at spaced points at one end of a flexible backing strip 22 for the wiper blade 30, the other end 44 of the primary yoke 12 being directly and movably connected at 46 to the backing strip 22 and pivotally connected at 50 to one end of an arm 48 whose other end is connected at 54 to the other end of the backing strip 22, and a spring 56 connected to the yoke 12 and the arm 48 so as normally to deform the strip 22 and wiper blade 30 into a curved shape. The backing strip 22, Fig. 8, has a longitudinal slot 24 and tapers from the centre towards each end, the slot 24 receiving the reduced neck 36, Fig. 4, between a blade retainer portion 32 and the wiper blade edge 34. The yokes 12, 20 and the arm 48 are of channelled cross-section and pairs of inwardly extending ears 42, 46 and 54 are provided on the yokes 12, 20 and the arm 48, respectively. The outer ears 42 and the ears 54 slidably embrace the edges of the backing strip 22 whilst the inner ears 42 and the ears 46, slidably engage in notches 26, 28, Fig. 8, in the edges of the strip 22, in order to limit such slidable movement. The backing strip in its normal state is curved in the opposite sense to the curvature of the surface to be wiped. The spring 56 mounted between a pin 60 on the primary yoke 12 and a pin 62 on the arm 48, causes the arm to move the strip to assume the curvature shown in Fig. 2. One end of the spring 56 is centred on the pin 62 between two plastic rings, whilst the other end of the spring 56 is connected to the pin 60 through a link 58.
