Abstract

1,078,008. Silencers for gaseous flow. GARRETT CORPORATION. Aug. 25, 1964 [Aug. 26, 1963], No. 34764/64. Heading F1B. A silencer for a gas turbine 12 comprises an exhaust duct 15 surrounded by ducts 16, 24, forming annular channels 25, 18, through which air flows in opposite directions to enter the duct 15 at 20. The duct 24 is preferably a continuation of the casing around the gas turbine 12 and the air is drawn into channel 25 through an opening 28 from the space around the turbine. Baffles 26 with staggered openings 27 are provided in channel 25 and helical baffles 22, 32, are provided in channel 18 and duct 15, the baffles producing rotation of the gases in the same sense. The walls 15, 16, may be of porous metal or ceramic or they may be of sheet metal, e. g. stainless steel, with fine slits of 0À003 to 0À006 inches in width formed therein.
