Abstract
1334764 Treating exhaust gases ARVIN INDUSTRIES Inc 29 July 1971 [10 May 1971] 35667/71 Heading F1B Catalytic converter for purifying exhaust gas comprises an elongated shell having double side walls 10, 12 with thermal insulation 15 between them, end caps 20 containing inlet and outlet conduits 28 and 30 respectively and first and second conversion chambers 39 for holding a catalyst, each of the chambers extending obliquely across the shell, the first chamber having a first perforate wall 37 open to the inlet conduit and a second perforate wall 40 open to a first perforate wall 40 of the second chamber which has a second perforate wall 37 open to the outlet conduit. The inlet and outlet conduits are supported in flanged openings in the end caps and also in flanged openings 24 in perforated plates 22 spaced inwardly from the end caps to form sound attenuating chambers. The chambers 39 are rectangular in cross-section and are mounted in the shell by means of flanged end walls 44. At the upstream end of each chamber the flange of the end wall is joggled as at 50 and secured to the shell. A similar connection is provided by joggling the flange of the downstream end walls, as at 52. The joggled part of the flange is curved to correspond with the elliptical crosssection of the shell. A pipe 72 extends diametrically across the shell and has openings 75 through which compressed air is blown into the gas stream. The first chamber operates in a reducing atmosphere to convert oxides of nitrogen and the second chamber operates in an oxidizing atmosphere to convert carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons. In a modification Fig. 6 (not shown) the first chamber slopes upwardly and the second chamber slopes downwardly in the direction of flow of the gas through the shell, so that the two chambers form an inverted V in the shell. An air injection pipe is provided at the junction between the chambers. Catalyst pellets are filled into the chambers through apertures which are subsequently closed by threaded plugs.
