Abstract

1330961 Treating exhaust gas ARVIN INDUSTRIES INC 29 July 1971 [10 May 1971] 35666/71 Heading F1B Catalytic converter for purifying exhaust gas comprises an elongated shell 10 closed by end caps 12, 13, a conversion chamber 16 for holding catalytic material supported in the chamber by means 18 to form a by-pass passage around the chamber, a first gas inlet 40 opening into the chamber, a second gas inlet 55 opening into the by-pass passage, at least one gas outlet 57 opening into the chamber and the by-pass passage and valve means 61 for selectively directing the gas flow through the chamber or the by-pass passage. The chamber 16 consists of a sleeve partitioned by four perforated plates 25, 26, 27 and 28 into two compartments 29, 30 each adapted to hold catalytic material, which can be filled through openings 34 closable by plugs 36. The ends of the sleeve are closed by plates 44 and 51. An inlet conduit 40 passes through flanged openings 41, 42 in the end cap 12 and end plate 44 respectively, the gas entering through this conduit being distributed by a perforated baffle plate 46. A branch 55 from the conduit 40 passes through a flanged opening in the end cap 12, gas entering through this branch passing along the by-pass passage through holes in the supports 18. At the outlet end, a first conduit 57 leads from the space between the end cap 13 and the end plate 51, and a branch conduit leads from the space between end plate 51 and perforated plate 28. The gases in the chamber 29 are subjected to a reducing reaction and are subsequently subjected to an oxidizing reaction in the chamber 30. To assist in creating an oxidizing atmosphere in the chamber 30 a pipe 63 passes diametrally across the shell and has apertures 64 from which compressed air issues to mix with the gas stream. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown) the branch 55 is omitted and there is a hole through the end plate 44. The valve is transferred to the junction of the first conduit and branch conduit at the outlet end. In a second modification, Fig. 8 (not shown) the inlet conduits and valve are arranged as shown in Fig. 1 and there is a single outlet conduit which passes through a flanged opening in the end cap 13. In a third modification Fig. 8 (not shown) the inlet conduits are again as in Fig. 1 and the gas outlet consists of a conduit passing through flanged openings in the end cap 13 and end plate 51 and in addition an opening through the end plate 51.
