Abstract

1,072,434. Semi-rotary actuators. MUCON ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. April 8, 1965 [Jan. 9, 1964], No. 27115/63. Heading F1F. A semi-rotary pneumatic actuator particularly for actuating a flexible sleeve valve comprises an arcuate cylinder 4, Fig. 3 extending over approx. 180‹ within which is slidably mounted a piston 8 having a piston rod 11 extending from both sides of the piston and substantially over a full cycle. The piston rod 11 which is guided by rollers 22 passes sealingly through cylinder and closures 5 to which pressure air is admitted through connections 15 to act on spigots 18 projecting from the piston. An air bleed passage 21 in each closure 5 permits metered escape of air at the end of piston travel and provides an air cushion for the piston. An arm 3 Fig. 1 (not shown) having a bolt and slot connection with the piston rod 11 is secured to a ring of the valve body eccentrically disposed with respect to the piston rod and movable with respect to another fixed concentric ring between which and the first ring a flexible sleeve is disposed. A valve 17 selectively and alternately supplies and exhausts air from the end closures 5. The cylinder may be made of synthetic plastic material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride.
