Abstract

This fluid operated gate valve can be made to handle large pressures and flows, but is quick acting and required small actuating pressures. Entry and exit mainfolds are connected to a cylindrical pipe carrying centrally the gate mechanism. This consists of an open section connected to a closed section, either being driven into position by pistons on opposite sides. The closed section consists of two half shells, sprung apart against retains so that if will just pass between seals in the central pipe. The pistons can be driven by the pressure of the main fluid flow directed as appropriate by interlocked servo controllers. Two supply ports are provided in each cylinder in an arrangement which provides damping when the piston approaches the cylinder head.
