The admission of material to a pressure line 94 is controlled by valve mechanism disposed within a charging chamber 12 and comprising a pair of valve seats 16, 20 which co-operate with a pair of closure members 18, 22 connected to pistons 35, 50 working in a cylinder 30 and means for selectively and controllably supplying pressure fluid to and bleeding pressure fluid from the ends of the cylinder and from that portion of it which is between the pistons. The ends of the cylinder are connected by a pipe 75 and fluid is admitted to the upper end by a pipe 78 provided with a control valve 80. Fluid is admitted to the space between the pistons by a pipe 65 controlled by a valve 68 and to the upper part of the chamber 12 by a pipe 82 controlled by a valve 85. The downward movement of the closure members 18, 22 is limited by springs 47, 55. The valves are actuated in desired sequence by solenoid or other automatic control means to cause pressure fluid to be admitted to the cylinder or chamber or exhausted therefrom through one of the vents 69, 81 or 86. The rods 36, 54 of the pistons pass through glands 38, 56 in caps 40, 58 at the ends of the cylinders. Optimum performance of the apparatus under various conditions is ensured by providing a series of caps having gland openings of different diameters and a corresponding series of piston rods.
