Abstract
1,070,049. Burners. DORMAN LONG (STEED) Ltd. May 5, 1966, No. 19860/66. Heading F4T. A burner for the combustion of fuel oil with oxygen comprises three concentric tubes 10, 18, 31 providing an inner supply duct for liquid fuel and annular passages for an atomizing gas such as steam and oxygen respectively, a spring- loaded closure valve 1 at the operative end of tube 10, the ends of tubes 18, 31 providing an annular convergent-divergent passage with the valve 1 disposed in the throat thereof, a jet head 14 secured to the outer tubes 18, 31 and having bores 19 into which are screwed jets 21, an outer jet head 36, and a water jacket formed by concentric outer tubes 33, 34, 35. Fuel oil ejected under pressure past valve 1 in the form of a thin conical film into the surrounding highvelocity steam jet is atomized and the mixture accelerated to supersonic velocity by expansion of the steam in the divergent portion of the jet. A small bore by-pass around the steam stop valve allows a small flow of steam, when the burner is shut off, to maintain the oil in the tube 10 at low viscosity, to purge jets 21 of oil and cool the jets, the tips of which are exposed to furnace heat.
