Abstract

1497832 Burners HOWE-BAKER ENGS Inc 11 April 1975 00201/77 Divided out of 1497831 Heading F4T A fuel atomizing device for use in a burner comprises an atomizing head 44, Figs. 1 and 2, connected to a fuel source 46 and to an atomizing. medium source 32, source 46 comprising a conduit open at one end in the head, source 32 being connected to a plenum 68 upstream of the exit of the conduit, a vortex cavity 86, an ejector nozzle 48 surrounding the conduit, and a vortex generating means 84 between plenum 68 and cavity 86 which imparts to the atomizing medium a high velocity vortex. Fig. 3 does not include impingement nozzles 72 or a diffuser portion 74. An alternative fuel supply 46A is shown. In operating a furnace burner the atomizing medium flows from source 32 into a manifold 30 and thence to plenum 68, Fig. 2, through a heat exchanger 24, a manifold 34, conduit 38, tee-piece 40 and conduit 42. A main gas valve is opened and gas flows to angled jets 54 where they are ignited by igniter 60, to heat the walls of heat exchanger 24, and therefore the atomizing medium. Liquid fuel is now supplied at 46. The atomizing medium may be steam, and the gas ignition may be at the top of the assembly, in which case suitably arranged nozzles and pipes are provided. The fuel may be liquid gas, or a mixture of these, or it may be coal dust slurry.
