Abstract
1,216,042. Spray burners; blast furnace tuyeres. CENTRE NATIONAL DE RECHERCHES METALLURGIQUES. 21 Feb., 1969 [28 Feb., 1968], No. 9406/69. Headings F4B and F4T. A method of injecting fuel into a shaft or blast furnace 2 comprises the steps of introducing a jet of liquid fuel into a first, expansion, chamber 6, from a pipe 5, injecting a jet of compressed gas into the chamber 6 from a conduit 11 and inlets 12 to atomize and mix with the fuel, passing the mixture through one or more secondary chambers 8 in series with chamber 6 in each of which it is subjected to one or more jets of compressed gas, e.g. from conduit 11, to enhance atomization of the fuel, directing the fuel/gas mixture through a convergent/ divergent device 14, 15, and subjecting the mixture at the outlet of the device to the action of hot oxidizing gas e.g. air from a channel 4 in a proportion such that substantially all the fuel in the mixture is burnt before being introduced with the oxidizing gas into the furnace. The ducts 5, 10 and 4 are preferably contained one within the other so that the hot gas in duct 4 preheats the compressed gas in duct 10 while the compressed gas cools the walls of its duct 10 and prevents cracking of fuel A frusto-conical nozzle 16 is arranged convergently at the outlet of device 14, 15 and is displaceable along the flow axis of the fuel mixture to regulate flame length. In a modification, Fig. 2, not shown, the final secondary chamber is supplied from a separate conduit to give jets of compressed gas substantially richer in oxygen. than are the other jets. The inlets 12, 13 are preferably tangentially disposed to the chambers.
