Abstract
819,042. Supplying liquid fuel to burners. DOWTY FUEL SYSTEMS Ltd. Sept. 27, 1957 [Sept. 27, 1956], No. 29564/56. Class 75(1) A liquid spray nozzle, especially of the spill type, is provided with a jacket surrounding the nozzle having a substantially unrestricted opening into the combustion chamber and a restricted opening from a pressurized fuel conduit, so that liquid fuel may enter the jacket and there evaporate, preventing the nozzle temperature rising above the boiling point of the fuel at the pressure in the combustion chamber. In the form shown, fuel passes by a pipe 1 via tangential orifices 4 to a swirl chamber 3 and spray orifice 5, spill returning by way of an annular spill orifice 6, a tube 9, a chamber 11 and a pipe 2 inside and concentric with pipe 1. The chamber 11 has a restricted orifice 13 at the rear whereby fuel escapes into a shroud 12 enclosing the nozzle and having an unrestricted opening 14 surrounding the spray orifice 5. The supply and return pipes 1, 2 may be enclosed in a thermally insulating jacket 15. The nozzle is stated to be particularly useful for burners in which the fuel is injected against the flow of combustion air.
