Abstract

Coke ovens.-In regenerative ovens heated by horizontal flues between the oven chambers, into the opposite ends of which gas is supplied alternately, the sole flues through which the preheated air and the products of combustion pass extend in opposite directions from the central part of the oven towards the sides thereof. As shown in Fig. 1, e are the heating flues and j the gas supply nozzles, the nozzles at either end being used alternately. Air from one of the regenerators h is supplied through one of the sole flues g<1> and a vertical flue g to ports e<1> at one end of the heating flues, while the products of combustion escape through corresponding ports at the other end and pass through the other sole flue to the other regenerator. The vertical flues g are connected also to horizontal flues l at the top of the oven through which the crude oven gases may be supplied to the heating flues when desired. In a modified construction, additional outer regenerators are provided for heating the gas supply when poor gas is employed, a second shorter set of sole flues, vertical flues, and ports being provided for the gas so supplied, in addition to the gas nozzles j for use with richer gas, and with this construction, all the regenerators may work on air when the gas nozzles are being used.
