Abstract
1,049,837. Arc extinguishing in switches. SOC. ANON. ETABLISSEMENTS MERLIN & GERIN. March 4, 1964 [March 18, 1963], No. 9086/64. Heading H2B. The arc runners 18-20 of a switch are disposed outside of a space defined between a pair of insulating plates 13, 14 forming a chamber in which an arc is initially struck. Each runner is formed by a pair of spaced conductors 18, 19 converging away from said space. The conductors 18, 19 may be magnetic and have a magnetic core 22 between them energized by series coils 23 to blow the arc into an extinguishing chamber 15 comprising spaced insulating plates. In alternative forms of arc runners the edges of conductors 18, 19 may diverge again (Fig. 3, not shown) or be joined together (Fig. 5, not shown) to form a gutter 25. Alternatively (Fig. 4, not shown) the gutter may be formed in a separate member 24 of magnetic material and surrounding the conductors 18, 19.
