Abstract
Repeatably frothable foam glass is made by a process comprising grinding glass with a SO3 content of at least 0.5% by weight in the presence of 0.15-0.30% of active soot, or the equivalent quantity of another C carrier, to a specific area of 5000 cm.2/g. or more, and providing at least 0.7% wt. water, which mainly adheres to the surface of the glass. The water may be supplied by use of water, steam or moist air. The resulting substance which may be in a mould or on a free surface is heated so rapidly to 200 DEG C. above the m.p. that a thin continuous gas-tight external glaze coating is formed. The entire portion is then heated to 800-900 DEG C., whereupon foam glass results. The residual SO3 content is still sufficiently high for it to be reground, if necessary being replenished with C, and used again as above. The glass preferably gives in boiling water more than 1 mg. of Na2O per g., and contains not more than 7% wt. alkaline earth oxides. In an example, a glass containing in per cent by weight SiO2, 74.5; alkali oxide, 19; alkaline earth oxide 6.5; and SO3, 0.8; is ground with active soot and treated as above.
