Abstract

Molecular sieve pellets bonded with silicic acid are produced by forming a plastic composition from a molecular sieve zeolite having a water content of more than 8% and from an aqueous silica sol having a specific surface area between 150 and 400 m.2/g. (according to B.E.T.) and a concentration between 10 and 40% by weight (calculated on the SiO2), and then granulating drying and activating the plastic composition. The water content of the molecular sieve zeolite is preferably between 16 and 20%, and said zeolite when suspended in distilled water preferably produces a pH value between 8 and 11. The silica sol may be produced by ion exchange of sodium silicate and subsequent alkali stabilization. The pellets of this invention are said to have the advantage that they induce surprisingly small amounts of by-products in the absorption of olefinic hydrocarbons. Activation of the zeolite is usually effected at 300-350 DEG C. Specification 974,643 is referred to.
