Abstract
1342102 Treating asbestos O HUBER 4 Jan 1971 [8 Jan 1970] 242/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division C6] A process for producing adsorption agents suitable for use in the production of beer comprises treating crysotile asbestos with an aqueous inorganic acid, preferably hydrochloric acid, to remove cations therefrom and to produce a silica-containing gel having free silanol groups, and drying the resultant gel so as to produce a dried product which is substantially free from adsorbed water but is substantially replete in said free silanol groups. A typical product has a silica content of 50-95% by weight, a magnesia content of 2 to 30% by weight and free silanol groups, a specific surface area of 100 to 700 m.<SP>2</SP>/g., a specific gravity of 2À8-3À7 gm./cm.<SP>3</SP>, a bulk density of 0À06-0À5 kg./l. and a Zeta-potential of - 5 to - 45 mV.
