Abstract
A zirconia-silica-iron pigment essentially consisting of a calcination product of compounds capable of yielding ZrO2, SiO2 and Fe2O3 i upgraded by contact with at least 1% of its weight of a strong acid. The pigments are such as those disclosed in Specifications 986,751 and 996,033. The acid is most effective with 3 to 15%. The following acids are referred to: sulphuric; nitric; phosphoric; citric; formic; hydrofluoric; hydrobromic and hydrochloric, the last three preferably being used in an amount sufficient to dissolve out substantially all the iron oxide in the pigment in excess, that is, not fixed in the ZrO2, SiO2 crystal lattice.
