Abstract

<PICT:1048505/C1/1> Apparatus for treating expansible materials e.g. clay in suspension comprises a treatment chamber 1 coaxial with a lower burner chamber 4 of circular or polygonal cross-section having peripheral radial burners 9 and an air jacket 20 with frusto-conical surfaces 11, 12 defining a restricted throat for the hot gases leaving the combustion chamber. Air passing through the air jacket from an annular plenum chamber 16 issues through nozzles 22 cosecondary air and through chambers 18 and sleeves 21 around the burners as primary air. Raw material entering through one or more shoots in the treatment chamber is carried upwardly by the central column of hot gases returning downwardly near the chamber walls. Treated material falling out of the recirculating mass is removed from an outlet 5. The top of the throat may be arcuate curving slightly upwardly and centrally recirculation of the material being encouraged by radial air nozzles, Fig. 3 (not shown). The combustion chamber may have a centrally-disposed cylindrical upright baffle either with a conical top or a bulbous conical top producing an annular rising stream of hot gases, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). Alternatively, the treatment chamber may have an upper flat deflecting plate disposed above the ceiling of the main stream of circulating material, Fig. 6 (not shown).
