Abstract

1,031,902. Photographic silver halide materials and processes. E.I. DUPONT DE NEMOURS & CO. Dec. 7, 1962 [Nov. 8, 1962], No. 46344/62. Heading G2C. Photographic elements which give positive images on exposure followed by treatment with a silver halide solvent comprise a silver halide emulsion containing an organic compound the nature and amount of which is determined by tests as set out in the Specification. In particular, the organic compound may be a carbocyclic aromatic mercaptan, a carbocyclic aromatic selenium compound in which the selenium is present as an -SeH group, or 2-mercapto-4-phenylthiazole. In general the amounts are said to be between 0.125 and 314g. per mole of silver halide. Mercaptano which comply with the tests are thiophenol which may be substituted with a chloro, bromo, amino, nitro, methyl, t-butyl or nonyl group #-Naphthothiol, thiosalicylic acid and p-t-butyl-o-thiocresol. The selenium compound may be seleno-phenol. The above compounds are used in specified amounts from 0.01- 0.0001 g. per 25 mg of silver halide. Seleno-urea is said to be unsuitable. In the examples, a film base coated with a silver chlorobromide or bromoiodide emulsion is bathed in an aqueous alchoholic solution of the compound, dried and exposed. Treatment with an aqueous sodium thiosulphate solution followed by bathing in a fogging developer containing 1 -phenyl-4 -methyl-3-pyrazolidone, hydroquinone and potassium iodide gives a positive image. The pH of the silver halide solvent solution may be acid or alkaline, and potassium thiocyanate containing sodium carbonate may be used. In other examples, 2-mercapto-4-phenyl-thiazole is added to silver halide emulsions in amounts varying from 0.4 to 5g. per mole of silver halide. After exposure and treatment with thiosulphate, the emulsion is flashed with white light and the image reduced chemically to silver. In example X, a binder-free silver halide layer is prepared by vapour deposition and bathed in an ethanol-water solution of 2- mercapto-4-phenyl-thiazole.
