874,080. Photographic materials and processes. KODAK Ltd. July 11, 1958 [July 11, 1957], No. 22400/58. Class 98(2) The materials comprise a support and a silver halide emulsion layer, particularly of high speed negative type including sensitising substances, and comprise also 5-thioctic acid (J.A.C.S. Vol. 76 (1954), page 1828), or else are developed in the presence of this acid, for the purpose of avoiding fog, brown image tones and scum on development. When in the materials the 5-thioctic acid may be in the emulsion itself or in an overcoat layer, and they may be ordinary, ortho or panchromatic or X-ray emulsions, and when used in development the acid may be in a pre-bath or in the developer itself. Sensitisers present may be dyes; sulphur compounds as of Specification 235,211; noble metal salts as of Specifications 570,393, 602,158, 602,160, 618,061, 680,593 and 682,355; stannous salts as of Specification 658,592; polyamines as of Specifications 661,645, 663,019 and 664,230; mercury compounds as of Specifications 742,219, 742,221 and 742,224; and especially alkylene oxideglycol type polymers and condensates as of Specifications 443,559, 548,019, 592,676, 600,058 and 874,077, which are described at considerable length. Four Examples provide full details of operation together with tables showing results with and without the last-mentioned sensitisers and with and without the 5-thioctic acid.
