A lifter for manhole or like covers A comprises a lever 6, 7, which may be telescopic, hingeing on a swivel pivot 8 and with means 1, 5 for attaching the cover to the lever so that the cover may be lifted out and swung clear of the opening. The means for connecting the cover to the lever may be in the form of a beam 1 connected to the cover by means of keys 3 passing through holes or slots 4 in the beam and to the lever by a bracket 5. In use, blocks 2 are placed under the ends of the beam and by adjusting a nut on each of the keys, the seal between the cover and its housing is broken. The lever is then raised to lift and swing the cover clear of the opening. The pivot 8 may be arranged between the operator and the cover so that the lever is pushed downwardly instead of being raised. The lever may be of any suitable crosssection such as round, square, oblong, oval, and hollow or solid; the lever may be in two pieces which telescope into one another and can be inserted into the beam for ease of carrying. The keys may be connected to the lever by chairs or links instead of by the beam.
